Widely recognized for the theatrical and viscerally compelling nature of his vocal interpretations, baritone Ryan Kinsella specializes in the dramatic Italian and German repertoire. Mr. Kinsella performs regularly with several leading opera companies throughout the United States, including New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, among others.
Reviewing his Wotan in Siegfried, the WASHINGTON POST declared, “Ryan Kinsella sang superbly… with sonorous bass tones.”
Recent career highlights include Barber’s rarely performed Anthony and Cleopatra with New York City Opera at Carnegie Hall, Gluck’s Alceste with Deborah Vogt and the New York City Opera Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, and Vaughn Williams’ A Sea Symphony with the Orchestra and Chorus of St. Cecilia at Carnegie Hall. Further appearances include the VOX composer’s project with New York City Opera, Wotan in Wagner’s Siegfried with New Jersey Concert Opera, Amfortas in Parsifal, Holländer in Der Fliegende Holländer, and Siegfried with the Wagner Society of Washington, DC. Moreover, Mr. Kinsella achieved artistic and critical success with Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast at the Kennedy Center. Of this performance, the WASHINGTON POST noted, “There was a booming yet never insensitive performance of the baritone part from Ryan Kinsella.”
Previous seasons include appearances with New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Opera Theater of Saint Louis, Central City Opera, Sarasota Opera, Lake George Opera, Opera at Florham, Metro Lyric Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Washington Chorus and Orchestra, and the Collegiate Chorale. Notable additions to his repertoire include Scarpia in Tosca and Iago in Verdi’s Otello.
Mr. Kinsella’s extensive concert repertoire encompasses the Beethoven Symphony No. 9 (Helena Symphony Orchestra), Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem, Dvořák Te Deum (Minnesota Orchestra), Fauré Requiem, Schubert Winterreise and the world premiere of John Kennedy’s chamber oratorio Song at Sunset. Mr. Kinsella is a winner of the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, a 2008 finalist in the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition and a Wagner Division winner of the Liederkranz Foundation Voice Competition.
Ryan’s upcoming engagements include Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast for the Masterworks Series at Arizona State University and Rachmaninoff’s Spring Cantata with Phoenix Symphony Orchestra.
