Young American baritone Nathaniel Hackmann is rapidly emerging as one of opera’s brightest young talents. His recent debut with Opera Theater of Saint Louis in Sweeney Todd caused something of a sensation with OPERA TODAY noting, "The star vocal honors belonged to Nathaniel Hackmann. With the rich and ringing tone he brought to his paean, the impassioned youthful spirits, the beautiful control on the hushed declarations of love, Mr. Hackmann regaled us with ravishing vocalism of the top tier. Add to the mix the fact that he is boyishly appealing, and you have, well, a definitive performance." Accordingly, the WALL STREET JOURNAL added, “OTSL's stunning production of "Sweeney Todd" had the best of both opera and Broadway worlds: This tight show was one of OTSL's best ever. OTSL fielded a carnival of talent including lyrical Nathaniel Hackmann as the sailor Anthony.”
As a member of the prestigious Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera, the baritone appeared as Raul in the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's The Hotel Casablanca among other assignments. Highlights of Mr. Hackmann’s current repertoire include Pelléas (Pelléas et Mélisande), Figaro (Il Bartbiere di Siviglia), Silvio (I Pagliacci), Marcello and Schaunard (La Bohème), Guglielmo (Così Fan Tutte), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), and Valentin (Faust) with such companies as San Francisco Opera, Opera Theater of Saint Louis, Virginia Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, DuPage Opera Theater, Central Michigan Opera, Sun Valley Opera and Pine Mountain Music Festival.
A versatile performer, Mr. Hackmann has garnered both critical and popular praise in a variety of crossover repertoire. Having recently completed a successful turn as Valjean in the National Tour of Les Misérables, Mr. Hackmann also performed to rave reviews as Gaston in the National Tour of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Additional musical theater roles include Curly (Oklahoma), Billy Bigelow (Carousel), Lancelot (Camelot), Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance) and Anthony (Sweeney Todd).
On the concert stage and in recital, Mr. Hackmann has been featured with San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Virginia Opera, Midland Symphony Orchestra, Central Michigan Orchestra, Northern Arizona Symphony and Northwest Indiana Symphony.
